The Real Situation
Everyone keeps asking what your plan is, and you genuinely do not know yet. That question can feel like a spotlight.
Why This May Be Happening
- Most adults changed direction several times. Certainty at 16 is rare, not required.
- You may not have been exposed to enough options yet to choose from.
- Pressure makes exploration feel like failure, when exploration is the actual work.
Pause Before You React
Before you decide anything, take four slow breaths — in for 4, out for 6. You think more clearly on the other side of a calm breath than in the middle of a fast feeling.

- 1Run experiments: shadow someone, take a free online intro course, volunteer, get a summer job. Data beats guessing.
- 2Start from what you like doing, not job titles: solving puzzles, helping people, building things, performing, organizing.
- 3Learn the full menu — four-year college, community college, trade and apprenticeship programs, military, certifications, entrepreneurship.
Choose One Next Step
Pick one career you're curious about and find one real person's daily routine in that job this week.
Think About the Outcome
Play it forward. If you take this step, what happens tomorrow? Next week? What does it protect — your peace, your grades, your relationships, your future? Leaders think one move ahead.
When to Ask for Help
Safety first
Ask for help when this keeps affecting your sleep, school, safety, or how you feel about yourself for more than a couple of weeks, or any time you feel unsafe. A trusted adult, counselor, teacher, coach, or healthcare professional is a resource, not a last resort.
